What is Podiatry and how can it help you?
Podiatry specialises in the conservative treatment of lower limb problems and is suitable for people of all ages to treat a range of conditions including arthritis, diabetes, nail surgery and sports injuries. Podiatry is particularly useful for older people to help maintain mobility and independence. Mark uses a combination of Orthotics (bespoke insoles for your shoes), mobilisation and/or manipulation of the fibula head and ankle, together with the joints within the feet. Mark can also utilise a combination of Podiatric Acupuncture and Trigger Point release for pain relief), together with the Bowen technique when necessary.
The Biomechanical Assessment involves a very careful examination of the way you walk, including walking over a pressure pad linked to a computer. The range of motion at different joints and the angular relationship of one joint to another is also established, and Mark will then discuss with your options available for treatment.
If it is thought that orthotics will be necessary, then plaster casts are taken of your feet and are then sent away to a laboratory. Full replicas of the feet are made and, according to the diagnosis and prescription sent, a pair of bespoke orthotics is made, specific to each individual patient. These will then be fitted at a follow-up appointment.
Your feet change as you get older, and it is sensible to then consider having your feet re-assessed every couple of years – in the same way, you would get your eyes examined if you had glasses or contact lenses.
If you are not sure what is causing your symptoms, or whether you would benefit from treatment or Orthotics, Mark is also happy to offer solely a Biomechanical Assessment enabling him to establish what the problem is and whether he can help you. This takes approximately 45 mins and costs £60.
If you are happy to proceed, Mark is then happy to move straight onto the New Patient Assessment at a total cost of £100. (Not £60 plus £100!)
